Prerequisite: Must have Vehicle Rescue Awareness or proof of equivalent training
This program forms the basis of the Rescue Technician’s vehicle extrication skills. Scene safety, the sequence of vehicle rescue operations, vehicle anatomy and construction, patient care concerns, and rescuer safety are all stressed in the classroom portion of the program. Two full days of hands-on exercises present topics such as stabilization of vehicles in the “on-tires” “side resting” and “overturned” positions, hazard control, glass removal, patient protection, lifting operations with various jacks, as well as low and high pressure lifting bags, cribbing and basic rigging (come-along and rescue chain sets). Students are introduced to the proper use of reciprocating saws and air chisels for cutting operations. The proper use of hydraulic rescue tools is practiced by the students, stressing the basic disentanglement operations including roof and side removals, door opening and removal, and dashboard roll / lift evolutions including tactics for spreaders and rams.
